Wisdom Tooth Removal FAQs for Parents

Our Guide for Parents with Children Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

How should my child prepare for wisdom teeth surgery?

Remind your teen to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and close-toed shoes (not flip-flops). They should tie back their hair and remove all makeup, including nail polish and acrylic nails. They cannot wear any perfumes or colognes. Your child should not have anything to eat or drink for at least eight hours before surgery.

Can I be present during wisdom teeth surgery?

Parents or guardians may not be in the treatment room during wisdom teeth removal. We do require that you remain in the waiting room during the procedure and be available to take your child home following the procedure.

What can children eat after wisdom teeth removal?

Following wisdom teeth removal, it is essential to follow a liquid and soft diet according to our instructions to allow the surgical site time to heal.

  • Days 1 & 2: Semi-liquid foods that can be easily swallowed with little or no chewing. Let your child eat small portions several times a day instead of three large meals. (Pudding, applesauce, yogurt, hummus)
  • Day 3: Soft foods easily cut with a fork can be added. (Bananas, eggs, steamed vegetables, pasta, meatloaf)
  • Day 4 and beyond: Slowly add firmer foods, avoiding the surgical site when possible.
  • Do not add crunchy, sticky, or tough foods for at least a week.

How can we minimize swelling?

Use ice packs on the cheeks and jawline for 24-48 hours to minimize swelling. On the third day, switch to warm compresses to help loosen the jaw, which will feel stiff.

How long will my child need to recover?

Most patients need 3-5 days before feeling “back to normal.” We suggest taking this time away from work or school to relax and give the body time to heal. Rest, sleep, and a soft diet are best for the first several days.

Can you provide an excuse for my child’s school?

Yes, please ask about a note when you schedule your child’s surgery, and we will have one prepared and ready for you on the day of the procedure.

What are some Do’s and Don’ts for my child after wisdom tooth removal?

  • Do not use a straw to drink liquids or suck on anything. The suction can lead to a painful dry socket.
  • Do not exercise or do anything strenuous for 3-5 days following wisdom teeth removal.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery following wisdom teeth removal for 24 hours to ensure any anesthesia is out of the system.
  • Do rest and sleep with the head elevated to minimize swelling and pain.
  • Do not rinse or brush until the day after surgery.
  • Do brush gently, avoiding the surgical site, and rinse the mouth several times a day using warm salt water. When rinsing or brushing, do NOT spit out any water. Instead, lean over the sink and let the water gently drain out of the mouth.
