First Visit
Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan may require an evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
- Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable.
- A list of medications you are presently taking.
- If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the necessary completed forms. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
A preoperative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery. Please have nothing to eat or drink eight hours prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult to drive you home.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medications (i.e., heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.).
X-Rays
If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary they can be taken at our facility.
Frequently Asked Questions for Your First Visit:
- What should I bring to the consultation?
- When you come in for your consultation, please bring your referral slip (if one was provided by your dentist or physician), any X-rays or imaging results that are relevant to your condition, and your insurance information (if applicable). Additionally, we ask that you complete the New Patient Forms before your visit to save time during your appointment.
- Can surgery be performed on the same day as the consultation, or will a second appointment be needed?
- Typically, surgery is not performed on the same day as the consultation. Your consultation is an important time to evaluate your needs and discuss the best treatment options. If necessary, we will schedule your surgery for a later date, ensuring that we have all the necessary information and preparation in place. In some cases, if the situation is urgent, we may accommodate a same-day procedure.
- What are the preoperative instructions for surgery, such as fasting or medication adjustments?
- If you will be undergoing sedation or general anesthesia, we ask that you fast for at least 6 hours prior to your surgery. We will provide specific instructions regarding any medications you may need to stop or adjust before the procedure. Please be sure to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after the surgery, as you will not be able to drive yourself due to the effects of sedation.
- How should I prepare for anesthesia, and what post-operative care should I expect?
- Preparing for anesthesia involves fasting prior to your procedure. After the surgery, we will provide detailed post-operative care instructions, which will include guidelines on managing any discomfort, taking prescribed medications, and following activity restrictions. You may need to apply ice to the treated area, stick to a soft food diet, and follow an oral hygiene routine. Following these instructions carefully is essential for a smooth recovery.
- Are there any potential complications or risks I should be aware of for my specific treatment?
- We will review any potential risks specific to your procedure during your consultation. Generally, risks can include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. We will make every effort to minimize these risks through proper preparation and care. Please feel free to ask us about any concerns you have, and we will provide all the information you need to feel comfortable with your treatment.
- Will my dental or medical insurance cover the procedure, and how do I handle payments?
- We accept a wide variety of insurance plans and are happy to assist you in verifying your insurance benefits before your procedure. If your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost, we offer flexible payment plans and financing options to make your treatment more affordable. Our team will work with you to help navigate insurance claims and payment arrangements.
